The setting for ON GOLDEN POND is a lake-front New England summer cottage where nature and the sounds of loons provide an atmosphere for this family drama about an aging father (Norman) in his late 70s, and his estranged daughter (Chelsea) confronting issues and differences from her growing up years.
In an important role, Billy, Chelsea’s boyfriend’s son, a confident and fun-loving typical teenager, spends extended time on the lake with Normal and Ethel, possibly relecting the son (instead of daughter Chelsea) Norman never had.
In the highly successful movie based on the play, Jane Fonda starred with her father, Henry Fonda (both noted screen actors) which reflected the actual troubled relationship of the Fondas and reportedly helped mend the rift. Katherine Hepburn played Norman’s wife in movie and both earned Academy Awards.
Playwright/screenwriter Thompson scored an Oscar for best screenplay adaptation. The warmth and humor and realistic relationships reflected in Thompson’s fully-realized play make all of the roles a delight to play.
Charlie Martin, the postman, is a plum role for a character actor. He and Chelsea were childhood friends, and he still has feelings for her. Dabney Coleman played the role in the movie.
The six roles blend to create an exceptionally entertaining, feel-good family play!
